Regaining Rogue part I: Applying A Little Rossi For That Black Eye

"Ah'm Carol... In all the ways that count!"

Welll, how dó we explain this one?

Remember how back in 1981, Rogue forcibly took over the powers and mind of Ms. Marvel? Sure ya do, it was back in Avengers Annual #10.

Yeah, funny story: turns out you can't just absorb another person without some serious repercussions. After getting drained, Carol remained dormant for a while... But all of that changed in 1984's Uncanny X-men # 182 in which Rogue lost control of her mind.

A little background: this tale is set right after the X-men returned from the gruelling events of the first Secret Wars. The X-men departed the Beyonder's Battleworld and, much to their own surprise, found themselves in Tokyo upon being returned to Earth. Before long, they'd be forced to fight Lockheed's dragon girlfriend who had grown to giant size and planned to turn downtown Tokyo into her nest... But before all that went down, professor Xavier asked Rogue to check in on the New Mutants back in Westchester... Which meant she had to fly halfway across the world.

I know this tale is set in the early 80s, welll before the internet made global communication a lot easier... But how about dropping a yen or two in the nearest payphone and simply call home?

Just a thought.

Still, flying from Tokyo to the States tired her out so much that Carol's spirit was able to gain dominance. Once she got home, she found the New Mutants missing, they were busy getting mind controlled by Emma Frost at the Massachusetts Academy, but the school's answering machine also included a call for help from one colonel Rossi... Hearing his voice was all it took for Carol to take over.

Rossi happened to be one of Carol's former lovers and he was being held captive. Carol/Rogue immediately flew off to rescue him and even invaded their fearsome flying fortress... the Helicarrier. In this really cool scene, Carol's smarts combine with Rogue's innate brashness to come up with an impromptu way of breaching the Carrier's defenses...

Penny for your thoughts...

She was able to rescue Rossi from SHIELD's clutches, but was shocked when the colonel (naturally) didn't recognise the young woman. When she told him the story, Rossi freaked out and slapped her. No way to treat a lady... especially one who can absorb your mind when her skin touches yours...

"I wish I had the power to kill you."

Wait, he *did* just hit her with his bare hand, right? So much for falling prey to her aforementioned powers!

Ow, continuity...

Kulan Gath's total mind control part II: Ye Olde Mind Control

When we last left Manhattan, the recently revived ancient devil priest Kulan Gath had used a master spell to turn the entire island into a Hyborean citystate. Quickly conquering his many super powered enemies, Gath seemed utterly unbeatable.

Even the Hellfire Club's Selene, as ancient and malevolent as Gath himself, was the N'garai worshipping sorceror's help (and mouth)less prisoner. But Kulan Gath wasn't satisified with merely mentally controlling the Morlocks, a fair share of the New Mutants and most of the Avengers. No, he wanted more mindless pawns to control...

He got his wish when the Avengers Starfox and Wasp were presented to him after one of the various fights that make up this two parter. By showing them their greatest fears, Gath was able to sufficiently weaken their will so he could bend them to his control. For Starfox, its the understandable fear to turn out like his brother Thanos, the genocidal despot... Understandable, because they share the same genes and upbringing...

But Wasp's secret anxiety is losing her humanity and shifting into a more wasplike form. Sounds horrible, lets hope its just an illusion. I mean, what are the odds of something crazy like that actually happening, right?

Ah well, at least it was still a buck fifty.

But the Wasp in Gath's reality was actually a control leeching vampire that drained her victims of the will to live, while Starfox used his great beauty to control anyone invulnerable to her teammate's pretty boy charms. Like Colossus.

Still, it wasn't just the bad guys who use mind control. In the approach to the final assault on Gath, Captain America had Rachel Summers resort to some mental nudging to enter Kulan's keep.

"These are not the black leather clad SM slavegirls you are looking for"

Barely covered Star Wars pastiches aside, this was hardly the final time Claremont relied on mind control to help the story get across. After Captain America managed to bring in Rachel and the New Mutant Magma as prisoners, the endgame against Gath quickly unfolded.

The wizard was rendered powerless by Storm who managed to snatch away the source of his power: the magic necklace he carried round his neck. But the battle wasn't quite over yet. Remember how easily Gath managed to overpowered Selene? Almost like she wasn't quite herself, right?

Either Amara suddenly developed telekinesis or something is very, very wrong...

Proving once again that appearances CAN be deceiving, it turns out that Selene had secretly taken Magma's place, giving the girl her appearance so she would be taken as Gath's slave. Now in possession of Kulan's necklace, Selene was ready to take over the world...

That is, if only Storm hadn't reached out to the dying techno organic New Mutant Warlock who offered a solution...

"There are worse fates"

Say, you don't think Storm could have meant being written by Brian Michael Bendis, do you?

Anyhoo... After changing into a semi-techno organic creature, she attacked Selene... infecting her with the techmode virus that turned her into a techno organic creature herself.

Some beautiful Claremont commentary accompany this rather... interesting... piece of art by John Romita junior. But there are some nits to be picked.

First, there's Warlock/Storm draining Selene's lifeforce, basically killing her. Whatever happened to Storm's sacred vow to never take a life? Second... How can Warlock even exist within the limited reality of Kulan Gath's Hyborean revertion master spell? Its already odd the Avengers member Vision is still a robot, how does an alien techno organic mutant shapeshifter fit into ancient times?

Still, ignoring all logic and established continuity for a second... lets see what happens next...

With Strange freed from his previous existence as a statue in Kulan Gath's throne room, the master of the mystic arts quickly came up with a way to deal with this whole mess. A bit of a shame Strange's way of dealing with it had about as much emotional maturity to it as a toddler closing its eyes and wishing real hard all the bad things never happened.

"What you just experienced was a temporalspacial claudication..."

An awfully fancy term for: we prevented Kulan's ascension from ever happening.

Sounds fancy and plausible enough, that is if you ignore the simple fact they were only able to achieve this by adapting Kulan's masterspell... A spell Gath  invoked áfter his initial ascension... So if Gath never arose, how could the spell have been there to stop him?

And... erm... My head hurts.

Skipping all that pesky temporal logic just like Claremont did, Strange caused the timeline to skip a beat so the original closing scene from Uncanny X-men # 189 had a rather different outcome...

Doctor Strange managed to prevent Gath's return by making his necklace disappear.

Not by invoking the flames of the Faltine and burning Kulan's presence from the amulet... Not even calling in the ruby ringed might of Raggador to pound it to dust. Alas, not even a single 'the power of Vishanti compells thee!' with complimentary pea soup spitting.

Nope, Strange does this.

Saving all mankind by yanking a mutant massacring Nimrod sentinel to the present, all the way from that far flung future of... 2014.

Yeah. Guess that's why they call the doctor... Strange.

Spiral staircase to synaptic seduction

Remember when the X-men lived in San Francisco for the first time?
The city by the bay has been the team's official stomping grounds for over four years now, but its not the first the mutants called 'Frisco their home.

Back in the mid 80s, the team spent a few issues in San Francisco, crashing at
Jessica Drew's place at Yarbro Court. In those days, Jessica had recently lost her Spider-Woman powers and was making a go of it as a private detective. But not even her sleuth skills could have deduced what horror the X-men had to face in Uncanny X-men # 206.

And no, that horror isn't Jessica's boyfriend David Ishima taking out a not-even-close-to-16-year-old on a date.

Enjoying a quiet evening at home, the team is suddenly under attack from Freedom Force, a government sponsored team of superbeings, consisting of former member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (Blob, Pyro, Avalanche) and some fresh faces, the second Spider-Woman and... Spiral.

Their reason for showing up unannounced? Spiral will tell you herself.

This multi limbed refugee from Mojoworld alone proved to be almost too much for the team, as her powerset of teleportation and all purpose magic made short work of Rachel Summers, the heir to the mantle of the Phoenix and arguably the team's most powerful member. And ow yeah, she's also capable of teleporting others...

With Pyro and Avalanche joining the fray, Rogue decided to take out Spiral in order to make sure there wouldn't be any more reinforcements. Rogue being Rogue, she decided the best approach was to touch Spiral, absorbing her powers and identity and knocking her out.

A solid enough idea, but unfortunately Spiral is an otherdimensional sorceress, used to having her identity twisted and altered by every single reality she dances through. Compared to that, Rogue's absorption attempt was easily warded off... With a little twist no one saw coming.

Spiral's personality proved more dominant than Rogue's own mind, so her mind was taken over but she quickly made Rogue's body her own and even growing her four extra limbs. Too bad she couldn't do anything about the skunky hairdo, tho.

Spiral in control of the super powered Rogue... Wonder how that turned out for the X-men.

Ouch. That's gotta smart.

Spirogue turned the tide for Freedom Force, knocking out Colossus and helping the others corner Storm and Kitty Pryde. Spiral was so pleased with her new form, she decided to 'pull a Carol Danvers', and touch Spiral long enough for the transfer to become permanent.

So. Lets recap here... Spiral, a slightly deranged teleporting sorceress from another dimension is presented with the opportunity to vastly increase her personal power and all it takes to stop her from grabbing this golden opportunity with all six of her hands is an emotional plea from Storm and... the police?

... Tiny, insignificant creatures she could teleport away with the blink of an eye are reason enough to make her stand down? Guess Chris didn't have enough space left to bring the story to its logical conclusion, not unlike this blog :-)
